SAT II Mathematics Level 2

The SAT Math Subject Level 2 exam is intended for students who have taken college-preparatory mathematics for more than three years, including two years of algebra, one year of geometry, and elementary functions (pre-calculus) and/or trigonometry. Although some questions may be appropriate for both tests, the emphasis for Level 2 is on more- advanced content.

FAQ's About Mathematics Level 2 Subject Test

1When is it offered?
The Mathematics Level 2 test is offered in the months of August, October, November, December, May and June.
2Are calculators permitted?
Calculator use is in fact permitted on this exam. For more information on calculator policy please visit the college board website.
3How is the exam structured?
The SAT Math Level 2 subject test covers the same material as the SAT Math Level 1 exam -- with the addition of trigonometry and elementary functions (precalculus). If students have performed well in these courses, taking the exam gives the students an opportunity to highlight the students' abilities and showcase interest in higher-level mathematics.
4Who should take this?
Students (freshman, sophomores, and juniors) who are close to completing precalculus with an overall grade of B or higher should take this exam in June. If students have finished a precalculus course and are seniors, should take the exam in October.

Mathematics Subject Test Level 2 Topic Breakdown

Numbers and Operations
The SAT Math Level 2 subject exam covers graphical and other properties of complex numbers. Level 2 also includes series and vectors.
Algebra and Functions
The SAT Math Level 2 subject exam covers advanced algebraic functions and equations including exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric.
Geometry and Measurement
The SAT Math Level 2 subject exam applies concepts learned in plane geometry to coordinate and three-dimensional geometry. The Level 2 exam also includes questions about ellipses, hyperbolas, polar coordinates and coordinates in three dimensions. The trigonometry questions on Level 2 place more emphasis on the properties and graphs of trigonometric functions, the inverse trigonometric functions, trigonometric equations and identities, and the laws of sines and cosines.
Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability
The SAT Math Level 2 also includes mean, median, mode, range, interquartile range, data interpretation and probability as the Level 1 Math exam does. The Level 2 also covers standard deviation, least-squares linear regressions, and quadratic and exponential regression.

Still not sure which to take?

Seek advice from your high school math teacher if you are still unsure of which test to take. Keep in mind you can choose to take either test on test day, regardless of what test you registered for. Please note that these tests reflects what is commonly taught in high school. Due to differences in high school classes, it’s likely that most students will find questions on topics they’re not familiar with.
