Frequently Asked Questions
What is Jump Start Tutoring?
Jump Start Tutoring is a private tutoring program that provides instruction for students in elementary, middle school, and high school subject areas. We also specialize in preparation for standardized tests, including the SAT and ACT.
Why is Jump Start Tutoring the best tutoring program available?
Jump Start Tutoring provides invaluable one-on-one tutoring focused on the individual student’s strengths and weaknesses. Our team is experienced in working with all types of students in each of their areas of need and is held to the highest standards of teaching. The tutors at Jump Start work with not only the student, but also their teachers and parents, in order to create an optimal learning and support process.
Who are the tutors and what are their qualifications? Will high school students be tutoring my child?
Our tutors consist of highly experienced individuals, who are top university graduates and teachers. SAT/ACT tutors specialize in either the math or verbal parts of the exams to ensure the student is receiving the best instruction in each possible area. Each tutor has experience in, and has received training specific to, his/her respective field. Our tutors are experts at identifying students’ weaknesses, teaching key strategies, and providing students with the knowledge they need to succeed in school or on their standardized tests.
Why does JST use as a Diagnostic Exam to determine an initial program for incoming students?
We use the scores from a full-length SAT and/or ACT exam to gather baseline information in order to best structure a proper tutoring plan leading up to a live test date. After analyzing a student’s performance on these tests, we also gather information about the student’s previous academic record—taking into account both high school and middle school classes—in order to formulate an effective plan of attack.
My child already got a good score the first time he/she took the SAT/ACT. What can Jump Start do?
Jump Start’s specialized program helps to target students’ weaknesses, however small or large they may be. Although your child may have scored well the first time around without any help, this does not mean that he/she cannot still improve their scores substantially.
When should a student start preparing for the SAT or ACT?
Ideally, a student should begin preparing for the SAT/ACT at the end of the 10th grade and continue his/her preparation throughout the summer and 11th grade, until their test date. Most students take the SAT/ACT two or three times, depending on their scores. The tests are offered from the beginning to the end of each school year.
If I cancel a session last minute or if I miss a scheduled session what is the cancellation policy?
We kindly request 24-hour notice for cancellation, barring extenuating circumstances.
What is the difference between a Senior Tutor, Master Tutor, and Specialized Master Tutor?
Senior Tutors typically have logged 2,000 to 4,999 tutoring hours. Master Tutors have logged 5,000 to 7,499 tutoring hours. Specialized Master Tutors have logged 7,500+ tutoring hours.
What are the hours of operation for Jump Start?
Both locations are open based around the appointments made by the students and tutors, so we have no set office hours. This allows maximum flexibility for our students and tutors.
Is tutoring provided throughout the summer?
Yes! One-on-one help is available in the summer either to help fill gaps in the student’s learning from previous years, or to give students a “jump start” on the material they will be encountering in the upcoming school year.
